Wayback Machine

My little disclaimer for this post: I normally try to post “good-looking” things, but I figure looking at the opposite is sometimes just as useful. And let’s just say that in some cases, limitations are what constrains aesthetics.

Design for the internet has come a long way in just a short time. I still remember being in high school on a dial up with a ridiculously slow connection. And although browser technology, internet speeds, and general know-how for web design has improved immensely over the years, it’s still fun (and nostalgic) to look back at some old websites.

Here’s a list of some notable websites via Wayback Machine

adidas (c. 1997): I won’t be surprised if this look comes back in style in say 15 years similar to how 80s graphics are popular again now… kinda looks like that’s when this was made.

Apple (c. 2000): Oh Apple, someone did something right between then and now… and that wasn’t even that long ago. “Whoa” is right…

Google and Yahoo (c. The Stone Age):

Amazon (c. 1998): Not bad…

University of Kansas (c. 1998): Rock Chalk Jayhawk, go KU!

And last but not least, Facebook (c. 2005): When it was of course called “Thefacebook”. I remember the home page when it had a short list of schools it was offered to. And after 4 years, it’s competing for web/world dominance with Google (Not to mention my mom’s interest)?

Head over to Wayback Machine and post links to some of your favorite sites in the comments. Enjoy!
